The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has designated Iowa City, Iowa, the world's third City of Literature, making the community part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.

"This is at once a celebration of the literary riches and resources of Iowa City and a spur to action," said University of Iowa International Writing Program Director Christopher Merrill, who led the UI Writing University committee that submitted the city's proposal. "We look forward to working with our new partners in the Creative Cities network -- to forging dynamic relationships with writers, artists and others committed to the life of discovery. This is a great day for Iowa City."

Iowa City joins Edinburgh, Scotland, and Melbourne, Australia, as UNESCO Cities of Literature. Other cities in the Creative Cities Network -- honoring and connecting cultural centers for cinema, music, crafts and folk arts, design, media arts and gastronomy, as well as literature -- include Aswan, Egypt; Santa Fe, N.M.; Berlin, Germany; Montreal, Canada; Popayan, Colombia; Bologna, Italy; Shenzhen, China; and Seville, Spain.

The Creative Cities Network was designed to promote the social, economic and cultural development of cities in both the developed and the developing world. Fiction and Poetry

"This blog is stupid & lame.

This blog is called "Iowa Writers' Workshop 2009" yet is only concerned with one half of the people in that class; namely, fiction people."

I just want to address your comment lest you think we don't care about the Poetry side of the workshop here on the blog. Marcela sent out numerous emails to the entire workshop asking for contributors from both fiction and poetry. Only fiction people responded, so that's what you have here. We do out best to provide information about all workshop events but as there is no one to rep for the poets (and because Marcela and I do things other than update this blog) many poetry events get lost along the way.

I do believe the incoming poetry students who asked questions of myself, Marcela and the other contributors were satisfied with what help we were able to give, limited though it might have been.

So if anyone takes issue, instead of bitching and declaring this blog "stupid & lame", you could contribute and make your world a better place.

Summer Writing Pact II

Essentially, this is a support group for writers who want a little structure during the summer. We're each deciding how many pages we will write each week and handing the pages over to a partner during meeting times. Here's how it works:

Pick a partner, or more than one partner. At LEAST one partner. Hopefully, pick someone who can meet you most weeks. For instance, I have two partners right now, and will probably have at least one more before the summer is over.

Decide your page count for the week. If you have a goal of ten pages, shoot for those ten. If you go higher, great. It might be helpful to switch our quota every week so we don't get sick of hitting the same page number. If you don't make it one week, don't sweat it. If you miss the mark consistently (more than two weeks), or exceed it, consider changing your page quota. Even if you skip a week, no biggie. We know people vacation during the summer.

New pages and substantial revision count.

Meet once a week, either Fridays or Tuesdays, and hand over a hard copy of your weekly work to your partner. Your partner can count the pages out publicly or not, depending on whether you want it known. If you cannot meet during these meeting times, meet with your partner some other time, but hand over the copies in person. This helps avoid skipping too many weeks.

This is NOT workshop. You can read your partner's work, or not read it, but you may not offer criticism. At the end of the summer, when there's a large body of work, if you and your partner agree to read and critique, fine. Not during the summer--this is production time.

Please save your partner(s)' work somewhere safe. You will hand it back to them at the end of the summer and you will receive your project in full from them too. That should be so cool!!

This year's Poets versus Fiction softball game will take place on SUNDAY, May 4th, at 3:00 pm. We'll be playing at Field C in Lower City Park.

I'll be there, but I will be a cheerleader. I'm pretty sure the Fiction side wants to win therefore I think Khaliah drinking beer and offering her best Middle Eastern zagret (just ask me to do it!) will be more helpful in the long run. But the rest of you neet to get out there and hit some balls! Or drink some beer....Either way. Don't forget to show up after the Chabon event at Englert. I think there was talk about a BBQ later.

Summer Workshops--Registration and Financial Aid

Registration starts tomorrow, April 21. You'll have to sign up in Connie's office. Also, as far as financial aid, if you don't have any other alternative, one course in the summer (3 hours) is considered half-time, which makes you eligible for possible loans/grants from the Office of Financial Aid. You have to fill out summer aid paperwork--this is also available starting April 21.

The Spanish Department is sponsoring a reading by Chicano author Rolando Hinojosa.

According to his wikipedia entry:

Hinojosa is a novelist, essayist, poet and the Ellen Clayton Garwood professor in the English Department at the University of Texas at Austin. He has devoted most of his career as a writer to his "Klail City Death Trip Series," which comprises 15 volumes to-date, from “Estampas del Valle y otras obras” (1973) to “We Happy Few” (2006).

Also, he was my professor at UT Austin when I was an undergrad and I admire him very much. A sweet man, a great writer and an all-around caballero.

The reading is at 218 Phillips Hall at 3:30 p.m. April 17th.

A Message from the Provost Concerning Theses and Dissertations

In recent days there has been a lot of discussion on campus and nationally concerning potential electronic access to student theses and dissertations in The University of Iowa's Libraries. The purpose of this email is to set your minds at ease and let you know what we are doing to ensure students' intellectual property rights.

In the case of MFA theses, it is critical to prohibit unauthorized electronic access since most publishers of creative work (poems, stories, plays, and so forth) will not publish anything that has already been made available on the internet. For our MFA authors, we are creating a version of the First Deposit Checklist that allows the author to explicitly rule out unauthorized electronic distribution no matter how the technology changes in the future. The students who worked with me and the writing program directors also thought it would be useful to have theses contain a special page asserting copyright and prohibiting unauthorized copying or distribution. This would be a useful option to have for all students.

In the case of research theses and dissertations, student preferences concerning distribution are more variable. In some fields, students wish to have their thesis work distributed as widely as possible and are willing allow this to occur through ProQuest or the University Libraries. Other students are happy to have their dissertations available electronically to University of Iowa staff and students but do not want more public distribution. Still other students want their work kept completely private until they have secured legal rights to their work via the patent process.

On Monday, March 24, I will meet with representatives of the Graduate College, University Libraries, and students and faculty from a variety of programs to work out a process whereby the authors of research dissertations can indicate their personal preferences about electronic access to their thesis work. We expect to have an interim process in place before the First Deposit Checklist is due.

I am grateful to the students and staff who have worked with me so far to help start the process of crafting a model policy for protecting students' intellectual property rights in the internet age.

Statement from the Provost Concerning MFA Theses

In recent days a number of people have been upset about what they
believed was a plan by our library to publish the creative thesis
work of students in our writing programs on the internet without
their permission. Let me say as simply and clearly as I can, there is
no such plan nor will there be. I regret sincerely that we did not
convey this message when students and faculty first voiced their
concerns.

For some time now our library, like most major academic research
libraries, has been exploring ways to make its collections more
accessible by digitizing some materials. As part of that process,
there has been discussion about the possibility of making graduate
student dissertations and theses available in electronic format. But
any such process must be preceded by developing policies and
procedures that allow authors to decide whether and when to allow
distribution.

On Monday, March 17, I will begin pulling together a working group with
representatives from the Graduate College, University Libraries, our
several writing programs, and all other constituencies who wish to be
part of the process. Under the leadership of Carl Seashore in 1922,
Iowa became the first university in the United States to award MFA
degrees based on creative projects. Although this has been a rocky
start, I like to think that Iowa will again lead the way by
developing policies and procedures that safeguard intellectual
property rights while preserving materials for the use of scholars in
generations to come.

Open Access Debacle

The Open Access thesis issue was first mentioned publicly on some blog posts and message boards within the last 24 hours. It has since been covered by The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Huffington Post and The Iowa City Press Citizen. I feel the need to address the issue here so that we might begin to discuss it and answer the concerns of incoming students.

The issue is this: According to these articles, The University of Iowa is planning to put all student theses on line for free through Google Print. At this point students do not have a choice in this matter and the University is making it a requirement for degree conferral. Obviously this is of great to concern to anyone writing a creative thesis and perhaps to a lesser extent students in other fields.

So what does all this come down to?

A fight.

It is not a quiet fight and over the next few days it will probably garner both increased attention from the press and more vocal protests from the students.

I would like to add that I believe this issue will likely be resolved very quickly and in a satisfactory manner. You should not let this affect your decision about attending the program as it is very likely an issue of confusion and miscommunication between various departments that will ultimately not affect MFA theses. Right now there is something of an information vacuum that allows for wild speculation. However, I am confident we will have some clarity within a few days.

I've recently had a lovely email conversation about funding, classes, faculty, etcetera, which I feel would be something productive to post to the site as these questions are probably not unique to this person; however, I doubt he would enjoy having his comments and questions posted publicly.

Instead, I invite newly admitted students to feel free to ask questions via email, especially if you're nervous or feeling uncertain about anything related to IWW.

Joyce and I are bunking together for AWP and I believe Victoria is going as well. Hopefully more of you guys will decide you MUST BE THERE. If not, we'll bring you back some photos. I fully intend to learn to use my husband's cool Sony camera.

Also, the semester is winding down, and a lot of new people will be teaching next semester--and they have questions. I'm happy to share information about teaching Rhetoric, Literature or Creative Writing and I know other TAs are too. Post questions here if you have them, or send an email. Or too early to start thinking about going to the AWP Conference in NYC. I was at the Mormon Trek Java House last night, with other two winsome lady writers and we all agreed we wanted to get to AWP somehow. People, some folks already have their trips nearly planned out. I think it's important to go. I went to the AWP Conference in 2005, when it was in Austin, and it was a helpful and fun experience. I'd really like to go this year as well, though I am currently debating the lesser of two evils (3 plane tickets or driving, ugh.)

Who else is going or wants to go? It's Jan 30--Feb 2 (Wed--Sat). I believe, unless we are graced with frequent flyer miles, my family and I will be driving to NYC OR I will be driving by myself and my sad hubby will be home with our kiddo (sounds mean, but he doesn't think he wants to take a week of school off--his loss.)

So, possibly I will be driving, and if/when I do, it will be in THIS. Except mine is silver. Yes, I have recently upgraded my vehicle and would be happy to tow anyone else who wants to go to AWP. This recent acquisition seats six or seven, so I have plenty of room.

Please note it is likely that, when my sweetheart realizes I'm really going with or without him, he will have a change of heart and SO, my four-year-old will probably be going with me. He is a darling boy, but he is still a four-year-old and it is a long drive. (Though we do have a DVD/IPOD player with a headset for just these occasions.) Just an FYI.

Ok, people, so who's going? Who's thinking about going? Let's talk!

Upcoming Events and/or Social Gatherings

I'm trying to figure out how to allow contributors on this blog, but until I do, please feel free to post party, reading, or other event information. On of my personal favs, Junot Diaz, is reading at Prairie Lights on September 16th. I'm definitely going to that. Also, I believe there are any number of social gatherings in the next two weeks--a BBQ this Friday and the Potluck Picnic next Friday. I'm probably missing quite a few things, so please if you know of anything, POST IT!

Also, thanks to Rebecca for lending me her camping mat last night, thus allowing me to drink beer and socialize while still performing my momly duties. Yes, that was my 4-year-old slumbering under the tree. Very gracious of you, Rebecca--thanks again!

First Impressions

Guys, I developed bronchitis during my trip from Texas (sucks very much), so I've been trying to limit my interactions with others (luckily, I am taking antibiotics and they're working! I don't want to miss everything.)

Has anyone else noticed that Iowans are really, really nice? Wow! The postman took us to the apartment office when we got here. Random people on the street (and in Wal-Mart) have greeted us with outright perkiness, and the staff at the Health Services Center was kind and helpful (and soothing...boy was I feeling ill when I got here).

Connie and Deb are definitely topping my list of nice people in Iowa, but since I had already talked to them quite a bit via telephone and internet, I wasn't totally shocked that they'd be nice in person. ;-)

So, looking forward to meeting everyone!!

Newlywed and on the move...

I'm finally ducking back in here to drop everyone a note. I'll be leaving this Saturday and expect to arrive on the 15th. It's great to see lots of people have already gotten there. Not sure of our arrival time, but I'll be the one pulling a rusty brown horse trailer (filled, unfortunately, with furniture, not equines).

Oh, and I got married last Saturday. I'm not going to bombard you guys with dorky wedding stuff OTHER than this, my favorite photo of the wedding evening. ;-)

Did everybody get the letter regarding registration and workshop leaders? Any opinions so far on what other class(es) you might take? Or who you want to workshop with the first time?

Housing?

Hey guys, I've had a request to open up a housing discussion. Please post here if you have any information, questions or otherwise on housing.

I know the University Apartments have a no pets policy...

I'm going to figure out, eventually, how to apply hyperlinks. (It's just my own vanity that keeps me from asking my computer nerd fiance).

***UPDATE*** I emailed the University Apartments people and found out the following:

a) Internet service is included in the rent.
b) Heating is included in the rent for apartments at Hawkeye Drive, but not for Hawkeye Court.
c) Also, I was told for people renting w/out the heat included, set aside about $100 dollars more for heating each month.

However, it should be noted that editorials in the DailyIowan as recent as Feb 2006 voice complaints about high-speed internet needs.

I'm trying to connect with other people admitted to Iowa (all genres), just because I'd like to know some people when I get there this fall. (Yes, I've decided, in spite of scary financial issues, that there's no way I'm not going.)

So, if you could comment here, I'd really appreciate it. I'm moving to Iowa from Texas. What about you guys?
